I have been an avid reader for about a year now. However, I mostly read motivational/self-help books and business books. I wanted to start reading the best whitetail deer hunting books.

Deer hunting has truly been one of my biggest passions since I have been a kid. However, as I became aware of the power books can hold, I fell in love with reading as well.

This article is a combination of all the books that I have either read or will be reading in the feature or for anyone interested in reading a great book about the great whitetail deer.

Without further ado, here are the best 21 deer hunting books that could change the way you hunt forever.

Deer Hunting Books #1 – Precision Bowhunting: A Year-Round Approach to Taking Mature Whitetails

Do not be fooled by the title of the book “Precision BOWHUNTING: A Year-Round Approach to Taking Mature Whitetails.”

Although the book has tons of useful information for new and beginner bow hunters, this good book also has information for rifle hunters.

John Eberhart and Chris Eberhart do a great job of covering the entire year of hunting whitetails. The biggest difference that may surprise you is their approach to scouting during the offseason. (I will let you find out what it is in the book). They do have a more aggressive whitetail hunting strategy as they claim to hunt nearly 30 feet off the ground.

Although the planning year-round is what truly adds value to this book for both bow and gun hunters.

Precision Bowhunting has been one of the best selling books in the whitetail writing industry and holds knowledge on how to hunt mature bucks efficiently.

Deer Hunting Books #2 – Big Bucks the Benoit Way: Secrets from America’s First Family of Whitetail Hunting

The Benoit way of hunting mature bucks is significantly different from the way 99% of hunters approach the big woods. They use deer signs to not only locate heavy bucks but also track these bucks.

Bryce Towsley was a lucky man that got to hunt with the Beniot family for several years. He got to absorb information and tactics on how one of the best families in whitetail hunting harvested trophy bucks or as they call them “Benoit Bucks.”

In this book, Bryce writes down his account of how this type of hunting can lead to significant success in the whitetail woods. By no means are these tactics meant for the weak hunters. It is a tough, exhausting, and tough way to hunt.

However, the proof is in the buck pole. Benoit’s way of hunting has proven to be a successful method.

Larry Benoit has his book as well on how he and his family hunt mature deer. You may want to pick up both books if you are truly willing to become a tough hunter that is willing to do whatever it takes to learn How to Bag the Biggest Buck of Your Life (Tittle of Larry Benoit’s Book)

Deer Hunting Books #3 – The Total Deer Hunting manual: 301 Deer Hunting Skills You Need

The Total Deer Hunting Manual is by far one of the most in-depth books on this list. I mean 301 deer hunting skills you need are a lot of skills.

Field & Stream is a well-known magazine and they have also put their name behind this book. To me, Scott Bestul wrote 301 deer hunting tips and facts. They do not create any type of story. I would use this book as a guide to learn more about a specific topic. Find the topic, learn about it, and apply it.

I will be using this book as a reference book more than a book I would reread. Altogether, it has some amazing information about deer hunting and the best way to find deer.

It covers A LOT of information ranging from food sources and food plots to how to identify a bedding area for deer to field dressing a deer.

Deer Hunting Books #4 – Hunting Big Woods Bucks: Secrets of Tracking and Stalking Whitetails

Hunting the Big Woods is exactly what the title says. Hal Blood writes about his experience hunting big timber bucks that are rarer to find than the farm field and suburban whitetail bucks.

He focuses on reading the sign accurately on big timber woods. He will also add short stories to give the reader a realistic experience of what they should also apply to their hunting strategies.

Stalking and tracking do play a big part in this book, but he also mentions and supports still hunting by setting up deer stands and blinds.

Overall a great read for big woods hunters in mountain terrains.

Deer Hunting Books #5 – The Whitetail Advantage: Understanding Whitetail Behavior for Hunting Success

The Whitetail Advantage covers a wide range of topics from deer senses to the future of hunting.

This book uncovers a lot about deer behavior and recent research on scrapes and rubs. However, it is worth noting that Dr. Dave Samuel is from Texas and a lot of his knowledge comes from his experience in Texas.

Although all whitetail deer and mature bucks have similar tendencies, different terrain and environment change the way that hunters should approach hunting the whitetail woods for mature bucks.

The book is nothing crazy new, but it does have plenty of good information that would be useful to a hunter like yourself.

Deer Hunting Books #8 – Why We Hunt: The Five Motivations of the Modern Hunter

Aaron Futrell does a good job of using his own experience and historical data to give a deeper look into why hunters do what they do. As someone that loves knowing more about what makes me wired the way I am, this book will be on my list of must-reads.

It is a good read for anyone that wants to know more about the why of hunters rather than how to hunt.

Why We Hunt is a great way for you to understand how hunters and nonhunters play a vital role in continuing the traditions of hunting for generations to come.

The book is claimed to have a good amount of grammatical errors; however, the main point of the book is articulated well.

Deer Hunting Books #9 – Bowhunting Public Land Whitetails

Public land hunting can be a scary and overwhelming thought. Especially if you are a new hunter that does not know exactly how to hunt big bucks efficiently.

Tony Peterson offers strategies and tips on how to hunt heavily pressured whitetails with your bow. This book is one of the great reads for anyone that is interested in hunting public land or wants to hunt public land with more strategy.

There is no shortage of pressure on public land; however, that does not mean that you cannot still harvest a trophy buck.

Tony Peterson talks about how your expectations should shift a bit when bowhunting hunting public land over private land. Hunters today, in the age of the internet, get too caught up in TV Shows, Instagram feeds, and Facebook posts.

Although all those things are entertaining, the average hunter does not have countless acres of private land to hunt and excess amounts of time to sit in a stand.

This book has a wealth of information that an average hunter like you and I can apply to this hunting season and the deer seasons to come.

Deer Hunting Books #10 – Extreme Whitetail Tactics The Big Buck Serial Killer’s Best Hunting Stories

He talks a lot about how to prepare for the hunting season by putting in lots of hard work and preparation.

Overall, a great hunting book for someone that wants to be entertained by the crazy and funny short stories of the year in the whitetail woods and learn some helpful information that could lead you to your next hunt of a lifetime.

It should also be noted that Dan is not a full-time hunter, rather the book is about an average person that has to work during the week and may take some time off to go deer hunting.

Deer Hunting Books #11 – Whitetail Savvy: New Research and Observations about America’s Most Popular Big Game Animal

Whitetail Savvy is a book that will help you to understand whitetail deer at a whole new level. There is no shortage of information and observations in this book.

Although it is not specifically for the hunter, the hunter will benefit greatly by understanding whitetail deer’s behavior and reproductive system on a completely new level.

It goes into great detail about every topic and is structured as though you were walking through the life cycle of a deer. A great read for hunters and observers alike.

Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III is exceptionally knowledgeable on the topic of whitetail deer and their behavior and has shared it all in this book.

Are there secrets that are exposed in this book? Yes and No.

If you are a beginner in the field of whitetail deer hunting, then this book will have plenty of good ‘secrets’ that you will be able to apply to your hunting strategies and personal hunting game plan.

If you are an experienced hunter, then this book may be more of a checklist of things that you want to do before and during the hunting season.

I would not say that there are any revolutionary ideas or tactics that others have never exposed before Charlie Hicks.

A good review and book to reference while you are trying to bag a mature buck in a fair chase place. This book is a great place to start or continue along your whitetail deer hunting journey.

Deer Hunting Books #13 – Hunting Whitetail Deer: How to get Close (How to Hunt)

Will Hunt takes a very simplistic, yet informative approach to this book. It breaks down the basics of wind direction, reads the terrain, and finds the food sources to help you get close to deer.

This great read will help you do just that. Will Hunt is also not trying to sell anything in his books which adds to his genuine authenticity and integrity.

Deer Hunting Books #14 – Bowhunting Tactics That Deliver Trophies: A Guide to Finding and Tracking Monster Whitetail Bucks

Steve Bartylla is a well-respected hunter and for good reason. In his books, he emphasizes the importance of ethical hunting and the most important aspect of hunting, fun.

If you are not having fun hunting big games, especially whitetails, you may need to rethink why you are hunting in the first place.

This book is a long read; however, you get great details into the tips and tactics that Steve Bartylla uses to find success in the big woods.

Bowhunting Tactics That Deliver Trophies are geared towards bowhunters; nevertheless, gun hunters can find great information about how to hunt smarter. This is one of the best deer hunting books out there for hunters that want to learn more about their craft and take hunting to a new level.

Steve Bartylla knows how to work some whitetail magic and he wants you to be able to do the same thing wherever you hunt, so pay close attention to this book.

Deer Hunting Books #15 – Prince of Poachers – Part 1

The Prince of Poachers written by Charles Beaty gives you an action-packed story of his own experience as a professional poacher.

This deer hunting book is a great read for those of you who enjoy stories based on trophy whitetails. This first-hand account gives you a look into how he pulled off poaching mature bucks in the heavily hunted state of Texas. Poaching of famous texas ranches.

No doubt what Charles Beaty did was wrong; nevertheless, it was impressive. A good read for all whitetail hunters that want to be engrossed in an adventurous story of a man hunting private land illegally.

Deer Hunting Books #16 – Bow Hunting Pressured Whitetails: Expert Techniques for Taking Big, Warry Bucks

If you like bowhunting trophy bucks, this book is just for you. As Chris Eberhart and John Eberhart are hardcore hunters of the great North American Whitetail.

They are not trying to meat hunt, they want to harvest big whitetails each hunting season.

This deer hunting book is one of the best hunting books because it not only shows you how to navigate the whitetail woods, but it gives you insight into shooting the biggest buck of your life even if you are hunting in a heavily pressured area.

Bowhunting Pressured Whitetails covers how warry bucks can be nearly impossible to harvest. They go nocturnal, move methodically, and even avoid being seen during daylight hours.

It is a difficult task to shoot big bucks that are warry and methodical. However, this book will unlock your hunting experience to the next level.

This book is one of the best hunting books on the market for those of you that want to take bowhunting seriously and shoot trophy bucks.

Deer Hunting Books #17 – Whitetail Track’s: The Deer’s History & Impact in North America

Whitetail tracks refer to the idea that whitetail deer have had a big impact on North America and have given us great commodore and lifestyles.

Valerius Geist writes all about the history of whitetail deer and does a great job of fully explaining her points. A bonus is the photographs that Micheal Francis has added to the book for added appeal and knowledge.

A great book for those of you that want to learn more about whitetail deer and their history.

I believe that it is important to understand the way that whitetail deer have impacted our country and our lifestyles so that we can respect them more than we already do and hunt them ethically.

Deer Hunting Books #18 – An Antler’s Geek Manifesto – The Foundational Principles of a DIY Deer Hunter

Tony Hansen takes a bit of a different approach to deer hunting. He has become one of the best deer hunters by simplifying his approach to a few fundamentals.

An Antler’s Geek Manifesto was a well-written book for those of us that are DIY hunters. If you want to successfully deer hunt by yourself, you will need to simplify everything to avoid becoming overwhelmed by everything that it takes to become a great hunter. This deer hunting book is a great start to becoming a DIY hunter.

Tony Hansen takes a no-B.S. approach to give tips and strategies for both new hunters and experienced hunters. Would recommend this book to anyone that wants to get a good start hunting strategically this deer season.

Deer Hunting Books #19 – Non-Verbal Whitetail Deer Communication: The Power of Gland Lures

Non-Verbal Whitetail Deer Communication is a book with few reviews on Amazon, I have not read it myself, and I can find little information about the book on the internet.

However, the title intrigued me because it is a specific topic that I feel many hunters know about but do not understand fully.

Brian KInightlinger covers all 6 of the main glands that deer use to communicate with each other. Then he claims to explain how you can use the scent from these glands as lures.

A deer hunting book that I cannot immediately say is worth the read; nevertheless, I think I am going to pick this one up because of how interested I am in the idea of a book solely based on the non-verbal communication of whitetail deer.

Deer Hunting Books #20 – A Look at Life from a Deer Stand Devotional

Steve Chapman does an incredible job of taking stories of outdoor and hunting scenarios and applying them to the real world. This book is a devotional book and can be read one devotion per day.

I will say, you may not learn any new information about deer and how to hunt deer. But, you will be able to relate to the book’s principles and apply them to your life to become a better man.

I enjoyed this devotional because of how relatable it was for me and my passion for deer hunting. Talk about life-changing… this devotional can change your perspective and make your walk with God easier and more enjoyable.

This is a great daily devotional deer hunting book.

Deer Hunting Books #21 – Secrets of the Hunt

Secrets of the Hunt is written by two brothers. Chad and James Hampton. This book contains a great story of a young boy and his friend chasing a world-class trophy buck.

Although it is a great story, the main point of the book is that the principles that we apply to deer hunting also apply to our hunt for God’s purpose in our lives.

There are a total of 8 secrets. Each secret is directly related to your hunt for God and his purpose for you. A great read and very relatable if you are a deer hunter. One of the best deer hunting books that also relates to spirituality.

I also know Chad and James Hampton personally and they are great people that also run a ministry called Huntin’ the Truth Ministries. (They did not pay me to put their book in this article)
