The Best scent killers for deer hunting have been all the rage recently. As science started figuring out how to create products that can reduce human odor, companies jumped on creating products that claim to be the best scent killers for deer hunting. Many companies use things like dry technology to destroy the natural scent of a human at the molecular level.

However, is it actually realistic to eliminate all humor odor from your hunting clothes, hunting gear, truck/car, and anywhere else you walk before heading to the woods? I do not think so. However, great hunters make sure that they use the best practice and the best product for their needs to reduce the scent of the human body the best way they can.

Best Scent Killers for Deer Hunting (Products)

1. Scent Killer Gold Field Spray

Scent Killer Gold is one of the products that you can find anywhere on the shelves from Walmart to Cabelas. There is no shortage of people that use scent-killer gold as their main scent-killer spray.

This is definitely one of the most popular and effective field sprays on the market. Products do not become that popular because they do not work. However, a field spray is not enough to fool a mature buck’s nose. Consider the whole line of products to create a great system of the best scent killers for deer hunting.

2. Scent Killer Gold Laundry Detergent

Laundry detergent is a crucial part of the process of creating scent-free clothes. Every time you go hunting, you are most likely getting the scent of your fabric softener onto your hunting clothes. The Scent Killer Gold laundry detergent is a great way to compliment your scent-eliminating spray.

I like to use Scent Killer Gold in a specific way to ensure that you get the highest quality performance from your product. First, get a load of towels and put them in the washing machine with the Scent Free laundry detergent. Next, get your hunting clothes that need to be washed in scent-free laundry detergent and run them through the washing machine. This allows the normal laundry detergent to smell out of the system.

3. Scent Killer Gold Dryer Sheets

It is a good thing to run the dryer with scent-free dryer sheets just as you would the scent-free laundry detergent. Run the first load of towels in the dryer with scent-free dryer sheets, then do the same with your hunting clothes for the best results.

I also use a few Scent Killer Gold dryer sheets and put them in my airtight bag or airtight container.

4. Scent Killer Gold Body Wash and Shampoo

Scent Killer Gold Body Wash and Shampoo is a great scent-free soap to use in the shower while on a hunting trip. I use it once the morning or night before a hunt. I know some deer hunters that even go as far as not wearing cologne during the hunting season. I am one of those deer hunters.

This is another way that you can reduce your human odors such as sweat, dead skin particles, and any other significant scents that you may have come into contact with during the day. Scent-free body soap and shampoo are a very crucial part of the process of having the best hunting scent eliminator system.

5. Scent Killer Gold Antiperspirant

One of the biggest risks of walking out to the woods is sweating while walking into your hunting spot. Body odor is one of the worst natural scents that come out of the body. I try to remember to use scent-free antiperspirant as much as I can. But for all those hunters that go to deer camp, sometimes hygiene is not the most important thing on my mind.

6. No Scent Full Bundle by No Scent – Hunt Undetected

No Scent – Hunt Undetected products claim to eliminate 100 percent of human odor using their enzyme formulation to create an “eco-zyme” formula that targets the odor molecules of humans. The enzymes first encapsulate the human odor molecules and then kill them. Their products are non-GMO and allow you to avoid using any harsh chemicals or heavy metals.

No Scent – Hunt Undetected is a small business that not only delivers a great product but also provides great customer service.

7. Scent Thief Bundle

Scent Thief takes a different approach to scent “elimination.” Their idea is to create a product that will actually deactivate the deer’s sense of smell. This is a little different than trying to create scent-free products. Scent Thief provides a specific smell that temporarily disarms the part of the deer’s nose responsible for smelling.

I personally would rather have a product that takes the scent from humans and destroys it. Rather than trying to mask the human odor while still taking another foreign scent into the woods and creating another intense aroma.

8. Phaze 1: Shampoo and Conditioner

Phaze shampoo and conditioner are specifically designed to target the hair and dander that comes from the hair on the beard and scalp. This is a salon-grade product that leaves you feeling refreshed. Phaze Shampoo and Conditioner is designed to avoid dry skin and keep your hair in top shape throughout the hunting season without giving your scent.

9. Phaze 1: Body Wash

The body washes that Phaze makes are designed similarly to the shampoo and conditioner because it works on contact with the skin. It works to reduce dander while avoiding dry skin. This product is also salon-grade and a great product.

10. Phaze 1: Lotion

You can use this as an extra layer of scent protection after a shower. The lotion will help ensure your skin is moisturized. It is the last step in the first part of the Phaze System. A great option for those of us hunters that get dry skin in the colder time of year.

11. Phaze 2: Laundry Detergent

The Phaze system is one of my favorite products that was created by the Deer Society. It takes the compounds found inside of the product and encapsulates the odor molecules and then destroys them before they ever get out of the washer. I also appreciate the entire system that Phaze produces. This next product is specifically my favorite product in the system.

12. Phaze: H2Odor Sponge

These odor sponges are meant to not only kill the odor inside of your hunting tote, boots, or weapon case but also eliminate the moisture inside of those places. These sponges allow you to hunt as hard as you like and still wake up the next morning with dry and odorless gear to get right back at it the next day.

13. Phaze 3: Field Foam

The Phaze field foam does the same fundamental process of encapsulating and destroying human odor that can leave a scent in the woods; however, what makes this product so unique is when you use it. You walk into the woods and you are smelly and sweaty. This product is meant to be used in the woods once you are ready to hunt.

You will want to apply it to your hands, face, and hair to eliminate dander and other human scents that may have been produced on your walk to your hunting spot. There are not many products that are meant to kill scent while you are actually sitting in the woods. That is what makes this product such an amazing utility for deer hunters.

14. Scent Killer No Zone Tote Tamer

The Scent Killer No Zone Tote Tamers are used to put in your airtight tote. I find it very useful to use some sort of scent killer in your tote while it is being stored. I know for me personally, I sweat a lot in the early season and need something to help kill the sweat odor on my clothes. Scent Killer No Zone Tote Tamers are a great option to add an extra layer of scent protection to your process.

15. Scent-A-Way Spray by Hunters Specialties

This is another field spray that works great right before you head out to the field. This spray is also great for cleaning products that cannot be washed around the house. That is why it has made the list as one of the best scent-eliminating sprays.

16. Nose Jammer Field Spray

The Nose Jammer product line takes a little different approach to eliminating the human scent given off by the body while in the woods. It uses elements that actually overwhelm the nose of a deer. When the deer’s nose is overwhelmed, it cannot pick up the human odor and will not be able to bust you in your hunting spot.

17. No Scent Shoe Deodorizer

I often times overlook how awful all my shoes smell including my hunting boots. These shoe deodorizers help combat the smell of your boots. I know that for me, I put my pants inside of my rubber books which causes the scent to escape easier out of my boots. This product is something that will be worth the money and help you immensely get the scent out of an overlooked place. These are also made in the U.S.A.

18. Dead Down Wind Lip Balm

As hunters, we are always outdoors which causes our skin to dry out. The first place to dry out is often our lips. This lip balm is scentless and helps moisturize your lips again. There is also a sunscreen aspect of this lip balm that can protect your lips further from drying out. I would recommend this for anyone that has chapped lips during hunting season but cannot use normally chapstick due to the scents that normal chapstick have in them.

19. Hunters Specialties Scent-A-Way Travel Bag

The Travel bag is a great option for those of us that travel to go hunting. This bag has a double zipper system that ensures that scents from the outside stay outside such as gas, home scents, or car odors. It is big enough for most people to fit all of their hunting clothes that will be needed for each hunting trip.

20. Dead Down Wind Unscented Wash Clothes

The wash clothes are best used to wipe down gear such as your bow, black rack, grunt tube, or any other pieces of gear that are not hunting clothing that you can wash in the laundry machine. I like to use these when I am hunting without gloves on and leave my scent from my hand on my bow or anything else I touch with my bare hands.

21. Ozonics OrionX

I cannot talk about scent killers without the mention of Ozonics. Ozonics products give off what is known as Ozone. While this is common knowledge among most hunters, this new Ozonics OrionX has three different modes that include a hyper boost for the most ozone possible and a rubber outing to dampen the noise when setting it up. I do not use Ozonics personally because I do not like the idea of having to set up another battery-operated product in the woods.

I see Ozonics as a way to try to avoid all of the necessary prior actions such as washing clothes, spraying clothes, taking scent-free showers, and using other scent-killing products. However, if you are someone that is in a time crunch or does not want to worry about their human odor, I think Ozonica may be the perfect product for you.

The Most Important Aspect of Scent Killers for Deer Hunting

It is important to use some sort of scent killer for human scent control and reduce the amount of body odor that is in the air while you are deer hunting. However, the hunting industry will claim that their products are the best human scent elimination products on the market.

I have personally tried many of these products and have found out that the average deer hunter will not be able to fool a deer’s nose with just one product or even three. It takes an entire process of scent elimination and playing the wind correctly to effectively stay undetectable in the field.

“A deer’s nose has 297 million olfactory receptors whereas a dog has 220 million. Humans, for comparison, have a mere 5 million.” https://hunttoeat.com/hunting/big-game-hunting/how-well-can-a-whitetail-deer-smell/

This means that even if you use the best scent control products, there is a good chance that a deer will be able to smell a small portion of your human odor. So what can a hunter do to combat this?

Always play the wind direction and stay downwind and play the wind direction of where you expect deer to approach your hunting location.

Purchasing Time & Buying Guide

When it comes to making a good buying decision about what products will work best for you, you should take into consideration your own personal situation and the amount of time you want to spend trying to get rid of foreign odors.

For instance, I live on campus at my college. This means that I cannot use scent-free laundry detergent effectively. My strategy is one scent-free wash at my house, two scent-free dryer sheets in my airtight toat, and spraying my clothes before heading into the woods in scent-killer gold.

My advice to anyone looking for a specific product or line of cover scent products is to try to realistically estimate how much time and headache you are willing to go through to be ‘scent free.’

My list of the best scent killer for deer hunting (That work for me)

  • Scent Killer Gold Body Wash
  • Scent Killer Gold Laundry Detergent
  • Scent killer Gold Dryer Sheets
  • Scent Killer Gold Shampoo
  • Dead Down Wind Antiperspirant
  • Scent Killer Gold Spray (Late October – November)
  • Dead Down Wind Autumn Blend (Early October)
  • Scent Killer Gold Wipes for all my gear and truck (Once every 3-4 hunts)

Products I Plan to Try in the Future

  • All the Phaze Products
  • The scent killer No Zone Tote Tamer
  • Nose Jammer Field Spray (for a cover scent during the early and late seasons)
  • Dead Down Wind Lip Balm (I always get chapped lips while hunting)

I want to try these products and see how they can help perfect my scent-killing process and become completely invisible in the woods. I will update this most likely next year as I try out new products. As of right now in 2022, I do not want to mess up my current system and get busted during the rut.

The Power of Cover Scents

Cover scents are not the same as scent killers. Cover scents are products such as doe in heat urine, buck urine, calming scents, and buck rub and scrape scents. These products are best used to aid in confusing a deer’s nose so that they do not notice the human odor in the air.

Conclusion

To conclude this article, I want to leave you with this one idea. You need to figure out what the best system is for you and the time you have to devote to maintaining your odor. Also, it is good to take into consideration the amount of money you have to dedicate to this as well. Because let’s be honest, scent-killing products for hunters and expensive and are used often.

I hope that this article helped you make a buying decision, and gave you more insight into different products that can be used to kill your scent in the woods or help you further your scent-killing system.
